Let me tell you something they don't say enough.
Depression is not just sadness.
It is waking up and wondering why you should bother. It is exhaustion that sleep does not fix. It is smiling at your neighbour, laughing at your cousin's joke, showing up to work — and feeling absolutely nothing inside.
It is, sometimes, the person who seems fine.
The African Version We Don't Talk About
In many Nigerian homes, the conversation goes like this: "Depression ke? What do you have to be depressed about? Do you know what your grandmother suffered?"
And just like that, the door is shut.
But suffering is not a competition. Your pain is not disqualified because someone else has a bigger story. Depression does not check your bank account, your church attendance, or your family's reputation before it arrives.
Signs That Deserve Attention
You might be struggling with depression if you notice persistent sadness or emotional numbness that lasts more than two weeks. Losing interest in things that once brought you joy is another quiet sign. Sleeping too much or not at all, changes in appetite, difficulty concentrating, and withdrawing from people who care about you — these all matter.
And sometimes, depression shows up as irritability or anger — not just tears. Especially in men.
It Is Not Weakness. It Is Not Sin.
I have heard people say that depression is a spiritual problem. Maybe for some, there is a spiritual dimension. But it is also a medical one. The brain is an organ. And organs, like any part of the body, can struggle.
If your leg was broken, you would not tell yourself to just have faith and walk it off. Please extend the same logic to your mind.
There is help available. Counselling works. You don't have to carry this alone.
