Healing is not a straight line
We often visualize progress as a ladder, but healing doesn't work that way. It loops. It backtracks. It spirals. Some days you feel like you’ve finally reached the top, only to wake up the next morning feeling like you’re right back at the bottom of the hill.
This variability isn't a sign that the process is broken; it’s a sign that you are human. Growth isn't a steady incline; it’s a messy, jagged map of trial and error. You aren't failing just because the path isn't a direct shot to the finish line.
The setback is not the beginning
When you have a difficult day after a string of good ones, your brain will try to tell you that you’ve gone back to zero. That is a lie. You cannot go back to zero because you aren't the same person who started this journey. You are carrying everything you've learned since then with you.
You go back to a version of the hard that is now different from the first time. You have tools now. You have insight. You have the memory of the good days to prove they are possible. A bad day is just a bad day; it isn't a cancellation of all your previous work.
What to do when you slide back
When you find yourself sliding, don't waste energy on self-criticism or analyzing why it happened. Contact your support. Reach out to the people who know your story and won't judge you for the dip.
Then, do the basics. This isn't the time for grand gestures or complex strategy. Drink water. Get some rest. Move your body in whatever small way feels possible. Sometimes the most profound thing you can do for your recovery is to simply take care of your basic animal needs until the storm passes.
We are here for the whole journey.
