Let's Create a Culture of Kindness Online

No jokes! It's time we realized that behind every digital gadget is a human being with real feelings.

Every comment, tweet, or post has the potential to uplift or crush someone's spirit. Unfortunately, online spaces often become breeding grounds for hate, bullying, and cruelty. We must change this narrative and build a culture of kindness online.

Think of the tragic case of Nigerian student Deborah Samuel, who was brutally attacked and killed after being accused of blasphemy in a WhatsApp group chat. Her story reminds us of how digital words can quickly translate into real-world violence.

Or consider Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop, a celebrated runner who was found dead in her home, allegedly due to a toxic relationship fueled by online threats and abuse.

These are just a few of the many lives lost or severely impacted due to online hate and harassment. Many have silently suffered, their mental health deteriorating due to cyberbullying, public shaming, and cancel culture.

Recognizing Online Unkindness

Online unkindness can take different forms, many of which are normalized in digital interactions:

  • Cyberbullying — Direct insults, threats, and targeted harassment that cause emotional distress.
  • Doxxing — Sharing someone's personal information online, exposing them to danger.
  • Trolling — Posting inflammatory content meant to provoke reactions or humiliate others.
  • Cancel Culture Without Mercy — Destroying reputations without allowing room for context or redemption.
  • Passive Aggression & Gaslighting — Using sarcasm and manipulation to make others feel small or question their reality.

How Do We Cultivate Kindness in Digital Spaces?

Pause Before You Post

Ask yourself: Would I say this in person? How would I feel receiving this message? If it's not kind or constructive, it's better left unsaid.
